Canterbury Tales: Wife of Bath

Canterbury Tales: Wife of Bath's Tale (4 of 5)

Publication Date: July 26, 2010

Chapter: English Literature During The Middle Ages

Man, it feels weird to be returning to Canterbury after spending a couple days in the 1960s. Be sure to go back and check out the strips that went online over the weekend, courtesy of the fine and noble people who donated to get each bonus comic online.

So, back to the Tales: Sir [blank]salot emerges from Gwen's court triumphant. He's stopped, however, by the foul and ancient crone that gave him the secret that led to his freedom. She wants payment for her help - payment in the form of eternal love. Now, as the narrator repeatedly points out, this old woman is the foulest thing on God's green earth, so the Knight is understandably hesitant to shack up with her.

Though he's repulsed by her very presence, the Knight is bound by his Queen to marry the crone, and - after a sad and pathetic wedding ceremony - the new couple return home to share an incredibly awkward night together in bed.

At this point, you might be thinking that Sir [blank]salot has gotten his just desserts, but this is Camelot, so you know the author is gonna do something to screw up our satisfaction. Tune in tomorrow to find out how the author blows it.
