Chapter: English Literature During The Middle Ages

So, big surprise, Middle English lyrics are really lame, and often serve only to state and later restate the obvious. Also, most of them are about God. Again, big surprise. I imagine that hearing them with music might improve the lyrics, but I doubt it.

The Norton's selection in the seventh edition is particularly terrible, and includes "I Am Of Ireland," as linked below. However, later revisions seem to have produced a slightly more entertaining selection, which you can find online here. Mind you, the poems in the new edition are still pretty lame, but at least they have cool titles like "A Charm Against the Night Goblin" and "In Praise of Brunettes."

Year: c. 14th Century • Info: Luminarium
